A home safety assessment is usually the least expensive and most useful first step a Central Indiana family can take toward aging in place. Instead of guessing which changes matter, an assessor walks the home room by room and identifies the specific hazards most likely to cause a fall — loose rugs, poor lighting on stairs, a bathroom with nothing to grab onto, thresholds that catch a walker — then ranks them so a limited budget goes to the changes that cut risk the most. In Indiana these evaluations are carried out by occupational therapists, certified aging-in-place specialists, and home-care agencies that offer wellness checks.

The people who benefit most are older adults recently discharged from a hospital or rehab, anyone who has had a recent fall, and family caregivers coordinating care from out of town. Because Indiana winters bring ice, early darkness, and more time indoors, entryway lighting, handrails, and slip hazards deserve particular attention here. When choosing an assessor, ask whether you will receive a written, prioritized report you can hand to a contractor — a verbal walk-through is far less useful — and whether any assessment fee is credited toward work you later have done. Confirm the assessor’s training in fall-prevention standards, and use the findings to plan grab bars, ramps, or larger modifications in order of urgency rather than all at once.
